Types of jobs

The kinds of plumbing work people ask us about

Some are quick repairs and some are major work. Telling us which helps us match you correctly.

01

Leaks and burst pipes

Water where it shouldn't be. These are time-sensitive, so say it is urgent and turn off the main valve if you can.

02

Frozen pipes

Winter freezes that can split pipes. Thaw slowly, never with a flame, and call early.

03

Blocked drains and toilets

A slow sink is one problem and a backed-up drain is another. The cause decides the fix.

04

Water heaters

Repairs and replacement for tank, tankless, gas and electric models.

05

Taps, showers and toilets

Repairs and replacements that are small jobs but still need the right part and a clean fit.

06

Sump pumps and backwater valves

Protecting a basement from flooding and sewer backup.

What to ask

Six things to ask any plumber before they start

01

Are you licensed and insured?

Ask for the licence number and proof of insurance, then check them with your provincial regulator.

02

Is that a quote or an estimate?

A quote is a fixed price. An estimate can change. Know which you are being given.

03

What is included?

Parts, labour, service call fee and cleaning up, itemized in writing.

04

Does the work need a permit or inspection?

And who arranges it.

05

What happens if something else turns up?

Hidden problems are common. Ask how extra work is approved and priced before it happens.

06

Is the work guaranteed?

Ask what is covered, for how long, and who to contact if something goes wrong.

  1. 01

    The right kind of plumber

A blocked drain, a water heater and a re-pipe are different jobs, and gas work needs its own licence. You hear from someone who does the one you described.

  2. 02

    Urgent jobs flagged

Tell us it can't wait and we pass that on, so the plumber who contacts you knows to move quickly.

  3. 03

    No pressure to book

You can ask questions, get an idea of how the job would go, and decide afterwards.

Good to Know

Questions about Namoye

I have a burst pipe or flooding. What should I do first?

Turn off the water at the main shut-off valve, which is usually where the water line enters your home, often in the basement or utility room, and switch off electricity near any standing water if it's safe to do so. If anyone is in danger, call 911. Then send a request here and mark it urgent.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

Don't use open flames or switches. Open windows and doors, leave the building, and call 911 and your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Don't wait to send a request.

My pipes have frozen. What should I do?

Turn off the water at the main valve, open the affected tap, and warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer or heating pad. Never use an open flame. If a pipe has split, or you can't reach it, call a plumber right away and mark it urgent.

Does a plumber need to be licensed?

Plumbing and gas fitting are regulated by each province and territory, and in most places the work must be done by a licensed or certified plumber or gas fitter. Ask for the licence number and check it with your provincial regulator, and ask for proof of insurance.

How much will a plumber cost?

It depends on the job, how easy the pipes are to reach and where you live. Namoye doesn't set prices. Ask for a written quote or estimate, and what it includes, such as parts and any service call fee.

Will the work need a permit or inspection?

Some plumbing work, such as new fixtures, moving pipes or water heater installation, needs a permit and inspection from your municipality. Ask the plumber what applies to your job and who arranges it.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain?

It depends on where the blockage is. Generally you are responsible for the pipes on your property, and the municipality for the main sewer and water lines in the street. Some municipalities share responsibility for the connection, so check with yours before you pay for work.

Can you help with a water heater?

Yes. Tell us in the message box whether it's a repair or a replacement, whether it is gas, electric or a tankless model, and its make and age if you know them. If it's a rental heater, check the contract and cancellation terms before replacing it.

Are there lead pipes in my home?

Older homes can have lead water service lines or pipes. If your home was built before the 1960s or 1970s, ask your municipality or a plumber how to check, and about testing your water.

Will the plumber come out the same day?

It depends on the plumber's schedule and how urgent the job is. Mark it urgent and say when you're free.

What should I have ready?

What's happening and where in the house, when it started, anything you've already tried, and your postal code. Photos help if the plumber asks for them.

Is Namoye a plumbing company?

No. Namoye is a free matching service. It doesn't do the work or guarantee it. The plumber who contacts you is responsible for the job and the quote.

Will several plumbers call me, and does it cost anything?

No to both. A verified plumber contacts you, and Namoye is free for you.
